Pure oxygen providing relief for Long Covid

Since it opened its doors four years ago, OxyGeneration was mainly used by people with injuries that were stubbornly slow to heal, diabetic foot ulcers threatening amputation and people suffering from radiation burns after cancer treatment.
But since the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside down, the hyperbaric oxygenation clinic has a new clientele – the silent populace left with Long Covid.
Co-founder Brian Lynch estimates that 26 per cent of users now come to treat the symptoms of Long Covid. As there is no Long Covid clinic west of the Shannon, patients have been left to manage the symptoms themselves and they are really struggling.
“We’ve had a teenager who had to helped from the couch to the kitchen to bed. She went from being a normal, sporty girl to not able to move on her own. She’s had 25 sessions and is now back at school,” he reveals.
“A paramedic we had in, he got it really bad. It’s really helped his lung function. We’ve had a lot of nurses in, who were left with a lot of terrible symptoms. One had no balance for seven months.”
The UK Office for National Statistics estimates that one in five people who test positive for Covid have symptoms for five weeks or longer. For around one in ten, the symptoms last three months or longer. Symptoms include fatigue, cough or lung issues, headaches and brain fog, muscle aches and pains and a prolonged loss of smell and taste.
