Date Published: 31-Mar-2011
The emergency services are appealing to the public to keep back from the scene of a cargo ship aground in Casla Bay.
Locals in Rossaveal and Carraroe are fearful of an oil spill from the ‘Pantanal’ stranded on rocks off Rossaveal.
The 7,000-ton ship ran aground in heavy seas and strong winds at 5 o’clock this morning.
There were no injuries reported among the 14 crew on board and no pollution so far.
Rossaveal Harbour Master is co-ordinating the rescue operation in Casla Bay in conjunction with Costelloe Bay coastguard and the Shannon-based coastguard helicopter.
They’re hoping to refloat the ship at high tide around 5 o’clock this evening.
Salthill Gardai have sent Gardai to the scene to control the gathering crowds.
