Galway Bay fm newsroom – Waiting lists in the west were reduced from over 43,000 patients to 20,000 in the first five months of the year.

However, members of the public have again been urged to keep their hospital appointments or call to cancel to prevent outpatient waiting list backlogs.

Bill Maher, CEO of the Galway/Roscommon hospital group says significant progress has been made with ‘do not attend’ rates but there is still work to be done.

The out-patient waiting lists were discussed following a question from Tuam area Councillor Mary Hoade at this week’s meeting of the HSE West Regional Health Forum.

Councillor Hoade said a system should be introduced to remind patients of appointments that are given for the following year.

Bill Maher responded by saying that patients are currently notified by letter six weeks in advance, and in urgent cases patients are contacted by phone.
