Bord Iascaigh Mhara expects the next round of public consultations on a proposed fish farm off the coast of Galway Bay to begin before the end of the year.

Up to 13 state bodies are currently reviewing the plans and have until early October to make submissions.

BIM has applied for a deep sea salmon farming licence at a site around 6 kilometres off the Aran Island of Inis Oírr.

If it gets the go ahead, it has the potential to create over 300 jobs and produce around 100 million euro worth of salmon a year.

The Department of Marine requested that statutory consultations take place, and bodies have until the first week in October to make comments.
