Galway Bay fm newsroom – Protestors have gathered outside St. Brigid’s psychiatric unit in Ballinasloe this evening.

The rally is being held as part of a campaign to prevent the closure of the 22 acute bed ward later this year.

Local Sinn Fein organisers say up to 40 people are taking part and argue that the HSE decision runs contrary to commitments made in the national ‘A Vision for Change’ document.

The HSE says the facility will instead be used to provide enhanced community based mental health care.

It’s to meet with Trade Unions next week to discuss the reconfiguration plans.
