Date Published: 14-Apr-2012
Up to a hundred protestors broke through Garda lines at the Labour Party conference in the city this afternoon.
There were clashes between some demonstrators and officers at NUI Galway – after people tried to remove the barriers preventing them from gaining access to the Bailey allen hall where the event is taking place.
There are reports that pepper spray was used during the incident.
Gardaí are unable to confirm if any arrests had been made but protestors have now left NUI Galway.
The demonstrators who broke through security lines represent a minority of the demonstration.
Earlier, thousands of protestors gathered in Eyre Square for a peaceful rally ahead of the March to NUI Galway.
The majority of protestors were demonstrating over the household charge.
Roscommon South Leitrim TD Luke Ming Flanagan was among speakers at the rally in Eyre Square.
