A protest is getting underway outside the city based Lisbrook asylum centre, at the former Ibis Hotel.

A group of up to 20 United Left Alliance protestors are marching in support of the residents who are to be relocated to other centres nationwide.

Over 270 residents are to be moved as part of nationwide restructuring plans and 25 staff are set to lose their jobs.

The Department of Justice says the closure is part of an ongoing programme of consolidation of RIA Reception & Integration Agency accommodation.

100 residents last evening received faxes of their relocation details and it’s understood they are to be moved within the next day or two.

The timeline for all transfers has been set for completion by the end of next month.
