PROTEST PLANNED FOR GLENAMADDY TURFCUTTING MEETING
Date Published: 28-Jun-2011
A group of turf-cutters in North Galway, who have joined the campaign against a ban on turfcutting, are planning a protest meeting in Glenamaddy this afternoon.
A group calling themselves the Special Area of Conservation Alliance (SACA) is meeting in Glenamaddy Community Centre at 2 o’clock this afternoon to discuss their concerns over the latest agreement.
A further public protest against the proposed ban will take place outside the Shannon Oaks hotel in Portumna tomorrow morning.
It’s been agreed that turf cutters would be offered relocation and compensation of a thousand euro a year for up to 15 years.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service is meeting the public in Glenamaddy today to provide information.
The group includes bog-owners from Mountbellew and the surrounding areas of Glenamaddy.
