Galway Bay fm newsroom – A 3 mile protest march will take place in An Spidéal next Sunday. (23/2)

It’s part of a campaign to support the work and decision of the previous Irish Language Commissioner, Seán Ó Cuirreáin to resign after 10 years in the role.

According to campaign organisers, he felt that the State was forcing people in Gaeltacht areas to conduct their business through English with many State agencies.

Protestors will gather outside the office of An Coimisinéar Teanga near An Spidéal at 2p.m next Sunday.

A letter will be handed to outgoing Coimisinéar, Seán Ó Cuirreáin expressing the Gaeltacht’s gratitude for 10 years of diligent service.

The group will then walk to the offices of Roinn na Gaeltachta in Na Forbacha where they’ll hand over another letter demanding that necessary changes be made by the Minister for the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley, to allow people conduct their business through Irish.

Campaign spokesperson, Donncha Ó hÉallaithe says the Government has to act to protect the Irish language.
