Protesters from many counties marched from Eyre Square yesterday, led by a lone piper, to oppose a plan to locate a Deep sea salmon farm off Inis Oirr.

Gardai on duty at the start of the protest at Eyre Square estimated the crowd setting out at approximately 600 but others joined in along the route to the Spanish Arch pushing up the numbers to over double that figure.

Afterwards a delegation handed in a letter of protest to the BIM Expo in Salthill.

But a spokesperson for the protesters said it was "reluctantly accepted" and they were told it should be sent to the Aquaculture section and not to Marine.

One of the organisers of the Galway march, Brian Curran, said it was well supported by concerned people from all over Ireland.
