Proposal to create new Rahoon-Kingston greenway
Galway City Council has been asked to consider transforming Millars Lane into an urban greenway connecting Rahoon and Kingston.
Local area councillor John Connolly has asked the Council’s Transport Section to look at the possibility of enhancing the area, and to consider installing a segregated cycle lane on the Western Distributor Road as a safety measure.
“The contour and linear path of the road makes it suitable and easily adaptable for such a measure. Despite this, conditions can be hazardous when cars and bicycles share the same road space. Separating cyclists from motorists would enhance the safety of cycling along the road.
“Segregated cycle lanes are considerably safer and would also serve as an enjoyable amenity for the city. We should look at the proposed segregated cycle lanes in Dublin as an example to model our own on. One such road which would require little alteration to implement this is the Western Distributor road.”
“I placed a motion on the Council agenda for the July meeting seeking that the Council would segregate the cycle lane that runs the length of the Distributor Road from Cappagh Road to Bishop O’Donnell Road. Unfortunately, the motion wasn’t discussed, but I have written to the Transport Section of the council seeking this enhanced safety feature be developed,” he said.
Cllr Connolly has also asked the council to look at the potential of enhancing Millars Lane as a potential urban greenway.
“Millers Lane has the capability of linking Rahoon with Kingston purely for non-motorised vehicles and pedestrians. This could also provide a direct route between Rahoon and the proposed new amenity development in Kingston.
“The City Development Plan compels the city to develop and improve the city’s greenway network and it would seem obvious to me that Millars Lane should form part of that network.
“The lane is already a public right of way and a small improvement in the surface of the lane could open it up for greater use.”
