Engineers have been appointed to draw up designs for the extension of Salthill Promenade to Silverstrand – which will include coastal protection works.

Galway City Council has appointed RPS Consulting Engineers to draw up technical documents for the €7m project, which will allow it advance to tender stage.

While funding has not yet been allocated for the major project, the local authority is hopeful it will be able to secure monies once the technical documents have been prepared.

As well as a planned walkway between Blackrock and Silverstrand, the works to extend the Promenade will incorporate conservation works at Silverstrand.

A spokesperson told the Galway City Tribune: “Consultants have been appointed for the Sáilín coastal protection scheme – which may include what has been termed a ‘walkway’ to Silverstrand.

“Technical documents will be prepared up to tender stage to be completed this year. As of now, a funding source has not been identified.

“However, hopefully we will be able to proceed and having technical documents will allow us to proceed as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.
