Progress has been made on Galway County Council’s plans to build a sewerage treatment plant in Roundstone.

The council is looking at two sites with a view to building a treatment plant at the beachside town.

This move will bring to an end the current practice of discharging untreated sewerage into the sea at the tourist destination.

Deputy Eamon O Cuiv says he hopes the process of site selection, design and tendering will proceed swiftly.

He says because the pipes and collection systems are already in place, the cost of the treamtent system should be modest.

However Deputy O Cuiv says it’s time the council looked at other areas where untreated sewerage continues to be pumped into Galway waterways.
