More than 300 delegates from across the world will flock to Galway at the beginning of June after the city secured a prestigious medical conference – the first time it has ever been held outside of the United States.

The four-day event will gather global leaders in the field of bone densitometry – and it will deliver over €420,000 to the local Galway economy.

The event was secured for the city through Go West, the Events & Destination Management Company based in Galway.

A host of international experts will address the International Society for Clinical Densitometry Annual Meeting in NUI Galway, running from June 1 to 4.

The final site visit took place in Galway last week, with the Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of ISCD, Peter Brown.

“It’s extremely important that conferences and events like ISCD come to Galway and experience our world class facilities and cultural experiences on offer.

“Galway’s local economy benefits greatly from international visitors and we are proud to look after them while they are here in Ireland” says Kerry O’Sullivan, director of Go West Conference.

ISCD is the only international professional organisation dedicated to solely promoting and educating excellence in skeletal health assessment, and has thousands of members from countries all over the world.

“It’s an exciting time for Galway and Ireland to host a world class conference in the heart of the city,” said Fáilte Ireland Ambassador and Consultant Rheumatologist, Prof. John Carey.

“The educational programme and invited speakers are sure to draw inspiration and learning for my colleagues in Ireland and Europe, as well as around the world.  Planning is going really well and we look forward to welcoming our international counterparts to the west coast of Ireland!” he added.

It also provides an opportunity for consultants, GPs, trainees, nurses, radiographers and other health professionals to present research on a world stage; to meet and learn from global leaders in the field, and to participate in hands on laboratory sessions with DXA software demonstrations.
