A Galway East TD has described the nomination process for the Irish presidency as a "crazy system."

Fianna Fáil’s Micheal Kitt made the comment in the wake of reports that his own party is willing to facilitate the nomination of Gay Byrne.

The 77-year-old broadcaster has yet to decide whether to contest the election which is expected to take place on October 27th.

As it stands, an independent candidate must get the backing of at least 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities to join the race.

Deputy Micheal Kitt said that’s just too difficult for the average citizen.
