Galway has the highest rate of prostate cancer in the country.

The stark statistic was revealed at the launch of the Prostate Cancer Institute at NUIGalway today.

Around 550 people die from prostate cancer in Ireland each year.

President Mary McAleese who is patron of the Institute attended the official launch at the college this afternoon.

Addressing the gathered crowd at the launch President McAleese said it’s the work of people such as the NUIG researchers that gives hope to cancer patients:

President McAleese then went on to receive the President’s medal from the Literary and Debating Society at the college.

The medal is the Society’s highest honour and previous recipients include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Noam Chomsky.

Auditor of the Society, Conor Kelly, says President McAleese is a well-deserving recipient of the medal.
