President Higgins to open John Behan’s new show, Migrants
Migrants, an exhibition of new work by sculptor John Behan will open next Monday evening at the city’s Kenny Gallery – with President Michael D Higgins doing the honours.
It’s the first of many events taking place throughout the year to mark the 80th anniversary of the popular family-run bookshop and art gallery.
John Behan, RHA, Dublin-born but a long-time resident of Galway, explores an emotive and very relevant issue in his latest collection of works.
The Broighter Boat and The Famine Ship have previously been significant motifs in John’s sculptures as he explored significant events in Irish history. His new ‘migrant’ sculptures, including The Mediterranean Dinghy, have given contemporary artistic relevance to millennia of migration – humans crossing oceans and borders in search of a better life.
There may not be as much retrospection in this current body of work, but there’s real presence and urgency.
