The event in County Hall was led by Mayor of County Galway Michael Mogie Maher
It ended a full day of engagements in the city by the President
He began his trip with a visit to Merlin Park Hospital at midday where he toured the Galway training centre.

The unit provides care for critically ill, premature and term newborn infants, and will reduce the need to transfer patients to other neo natal services in other hospitals.
Then, President Higgins launched the Irish Centre for Autism and Neurodevelopment Research at NUI Galway this afternoon.
The new Centre, which is co-funded by Galway University Foundation, is dedicated to ensuring improvements for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families.
