The husband of Savita Halappanavar says he has faith in the inquest into his wife’s death and hopes it will ‘get to the bottom of the truth’.

Praveen Halappanavar was speaking outside the coroner’s court in Galway on day one of the hearing which is expected to run for at least a week.

31 year old Savita had a miscarriage at University Hospital Galway and died four days later on October 28th, having contracted septicaemia and E.coli.

Praveen Halappanavar claims their repeated requests for an abortion over 3 days were refused because the foetus had a heartbeat and they were told ‘this is a Catholic country’.
