Potential for flooding in coastal areas as high winds hit

Poor road conditions and potential for flooding in coastal areasare expected on Sunday afternoon into Monday morning as heavy winds and rain hit the West of Ireland, coinciding with particularly high tides.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Kerry and Cork which comes into effect at 6pm on Sunday.

The warning reads: “Some very strong west, veering northwest winds are expected to affect western and southwestern coastal counties later Sunday, overnight and into Monday morning with mean speeds of 55 to 65km/h gusts of 90 to 110km/h. Strongest in the exposed hilly and coastal areas with very high seas along the coasts during this period also.”

High tide at around 8.50pm on Sunday will be 5.02 metres – with gusts of up to 110km/h, flooding is possible in areas like Spanish Arch and Salthill as well as other coastal areas.

There will also be heavy, thundery and prolonged showers on Sunday evening and night, which is likely to lead to flash flooding on roads.

The wind warning will be in place until Monday at 9am. High tide on Monday morning is at 9.15am with 4.8m.
