Pong puts people off the pub
The stench from the sewerage system in a North Galway village is so bad that it is putting people off going to the local pub.
And even when local groups meet in the community centre in Kilkerrin, they can get the smell of sewerage.
It has been claimed that the smell is ruining local businesses as calls have been made on Galway County Council to sort the problem out.
Locals believe that the pong is emanating from a manhole or vent and say that it has been in existence for the past ten months.
“It is putting people off going to the local pub,” remarked Cllr Mick Fitzmaurice, who raised the matter at this week’s meeting of Tuam Municipal Council.
He added: “The smell is nothing short of horrendous. The local businesses are paying enough in rates to the County Council without having their livelihoods affected”.
Cllr Fitzmaurice said that the stench seemed to be coming from a vent which is located close to the public house.
Earlier this week the independent councillor visited the village with an expert in sewerage systems in an effort to determine what the problem is.
