Date Published: 31-Mar-2011

Pollution fears are mounting at the scene of a cargo ship aground in Cashla Bay.

Locals in Rossaveal and Carraroe are fearful the ‘Pantanal’ stranded on rocks off Rossaveal could cause serious environmental damage if its fuel leaks.

The 7,000-ton ship ran aground in heavy seas and strong winds at 5 o’clock this morning.

There were no injuries reported among the 14 crew on board and no pollution so far.

Rossaveal Harbour Master is co-ordinating the rescue operation in Cashla Bay in conjunction with Costelloe Bay coastguard and the Shannon-based coastguard helicopter.

They’re hoping to refloat the ship at high tide around 5 o’clock this evening.
