Polling is well underway across Galway in the local and European elections, to fill 72 local authority seats and three European seats.

In Galway city the electorate is approximately 45 thousand, while in the county the electorate is approximately 130 thousand.

The majority of Galway voters will be given two ballot papers – local election and European.

However voters in the towns of Tuam, Ballinasloe and Loughrea will get three ballot papers as they will also be voting to elect their Town Councils.

Polling stations will remain open until 10 tonight.

Later they will be dispatched, again under Garda escort to the count centres.

The city council count is in Westside Community Centre while the county council count is in Galway Lawn Tennis Club in Salthill,

Galway Bay fm news will be broadcasting live from all the count centres, staying with the counts until every seat is filled, no matter what time that is.
