Polling underway at NUIG in referendum on gay marriage
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Polling is underway at NUI Galway this afternoon in a university referendum on gay marriage.
The referendum, which was requested by the student body, will determine if the Students’ Union will support a national referendum on the issue.
The first polling booth opened in the Bialann on the concourse at 10 o’clock this morning, and there’s been a steady turnout over the last two hours.
A second polling station opened at 11am in Aras na MacLeinn, and a third is opening around now at the Engineering Building.
Yesterday, Gardai were called to the university concourse twice to monitor protests by up to 200 students representing both sides.
There are no reported incidents today.
Voting is restricted to registered NUI Galway students, and will continue until 8 this evening.
