In a week when a Garda patrol car was stoned when it entered a housing estate in the town, Ballinasloe Garda Superintendent Peadar
Kearney warned that Gardai would not shy away from any particualr group of people who wished to take them on and they would do the job they were paid to do.

He told a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee that Gardai in Ballinasloe were committed to making the town a safe place to work and live in, but realistically, with changing attitudes, it was not something they could do on their own and they would only succeed in partnership with all the various agencies and the communities.
