D-DAY finally came for some 3,067 Galway students who sat the Leaving Certificate in June, when first round of the CAO offers were made available online at 6am yesterday morning.

Some commentators have pointed out that students have never had it so good with most students who will be going to college in September studying one of their top three CAO options.

The good news yesterday morning for college applicants was that in general the points required for many courses went down.

On a national scale, the points for nursing courses have seen some dramatic increases. Economics is another rising star this year. Applicants to medicine will have noted a five points drop in two of the five medical schools — UCD and Trinity, though the requirement remained steady at NUI Galway. Physiotherapy courses also showed drops, which expected, since applications to physiotherapy had decreased significantly.

In NUI Galway, Arts was up ever so slightly going from 350 to 355. The four denominated Arts courses offered by the University were up by a minimum of five points.
