Plans unveiled for new ‘Cowpark’ cycle and walking trail
National funding is being sought to advance longstanding plans to develop a looped cycle and walking trail in Clarinbridge.
It is proposed to develop Cowpark over three phases, at a cost of €171,300, with 80% of it coming from the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, and Galway County Council providing matching funding.
The first phase includes an outer trail loop, involving 1,900 metres of dual walking and cycling track. It will involve the installation of a six metres bridge over the River Clarin connecting Cowpark, which is owned by the local authority, and Kilcornan Old Wood, which is owned by Coillte, and already includes publicly-used trails.
The second phase involves building a car park, and 190 metres of a connecting trail to give access to the outer and inner loops. This is within Council lands.
The access road from the village to the car park may require passing bays; and will require signage. Phase three involves 860 metres of an inner loop, also of dual use.
“This is an important aspect to allow users to enjoy the unique atmosphere and landscape characteristic of the Cowpark,” the submission reads.
Director of Services, Michael Owens outlined at the latest Oranmore/Athenry Municipal District meeting that the funding application had been lodged.
It was met with universal approval from area Councillors.
Martina Kinnane (FF) said Cowpark was an “undiscovered jewel” and the submission of the application represented her “happiest day as a Councillor”.
Peter Feeney (FG) said not many towns and villages have such a wonderful resource on their doorstep and Clarinbridge was lucky.
He said the plan to develop a loop system goes back years, and was first started during Martina Maloney’s time as County Manager.
In response to questions from Frank Kearney (FG), Michael Owens confirmed that the Council has ringfenced €34,000 in its capital budget to complete the project should national funding be forthcoming. If they are successful in the application, the project would have to be completed by the middle of 2018.
