New high speed internet connection would position Galway favourably as a world class destination for new business.

That’s according to the Western Development Commission who has welcomed plans by two companies to upgrade commercial broadband in the west of Ireland.

Emerald Networks and Pipiper infrastructure are planning the 300 million dollar project to involve a transatlantic sea cable between New York and Ireland.

The high speed commercial fibre will offer locations in Galway and the West the ability to attract industries such as data management, gaming and online sports.

Construction of the cable is mooted for next year, and is expected to create jobs in the Irish construction sector.

Acting chief executive of the Western development commission, Ian Branigan says this infrastructure will help our economic recovery.
