Plans to tackle parking issues in Cleggan
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Long-running parking problems in Cleggan are to be tackled with plans to develop a car park on the outskirts of the village.
The matter was raised at this week’s meeting of the Connemara Municipal District where Senior Engineer Evan Molloy said it would be operational by the end of the year.
Mr. Molloy told the meeting that there has been ongoing problems with parking during the tourist season.
He added that the number of people parking on the mainland on the way to and from Inis Bofin has compounded the problem.
The new car park is largely to be used by people who are visiting the island.
Fianna Fail Cllr Sean O’ Tuairisg said certain provisions have been made for Aran islanders who wish to park in Rosaveal and questioned if an agreement could be reached.
Sinn Fein Cllr Tom Healy asked if an incentive could be introduced to legitimise any illegal carparks.
They were advised that the new car park will also have a paid permit system for longer term parking for Inis Bofin.
A traffic management plan is also to be developed for the area towards the latter part of the year.
This will go on public display for six weeks with two weeks for submissions.
The plan will also look to limit the time cars can be parked in the village.
