Plans to ease Parkmore congestion hit the skids
Claims by Galway West TD Noel Grealish that he has secured agreement from landowners that would clear the way for a three-pronged solution to one of the city’s worst traffic bottlenecks in Parkmore have elicited a lukewarm response from Galway City Council.
Deputy Grealish accused Galway City Council of rejecting his proposed solution and calling for the establishment of an independent Galway Transport Authority to take traffic management out of the hands of the local authorities in the city and county.
The Galway West candidate announced that he has secured the agreement of one landowner to provide land so that a new road could be built running up to Parkmore from the Monivea Road, while another landowner has agreed for another road to be built between Parkmore and the Tuam Road, near the entrance to Roadstone. A third landowner is apparently willing to part with land to widen the existing Parkmore Road and install an extra lane.
“This could take thousands of cars off the current approaches to Parkmore, where up to 10,000 people commute to and from work every day.
“If a park-and-ride service was then established from Galway Airport, you could have a shuttle bus bringing possibly thousands of people to and from work in minutes.”
“All of this would make a massive difference to the current situation, where people are sick to the teeth of sitting in their cars in bumper to bumper traffic and getting nowhere fast.”
A spokesman for Galway City Council remarked: “We note Deputy Grealish’s suggestions in relation to this. They may have merit. We will refer them to the National Transport Authority (NTA).”
