PLANS TO AMALGAMATE CITY SCHOOLS ABANDONED

Plans to amalgamate two girl’s secondary schools in the city have been abondoned.

The Presentation School and the Mercy in Newtownsmith planned to combine resources to make one school for the area.

A spokesperson for the schools confirmed to Galway Bay FM News that the amalgamation will not take place.

The proposed new school would have been located on the Newtownsmith campus which has capacity for 600 students.

The move – which was expected to to be completed in September 2011 – has now been abandoned.

In a statement to Galway Bay FM News this morning, Principal of the Presentation Cliona Ní Neill said the proposed amalgamation will "not take place."
