Plans for private hospital scrapped

PLANS FOR the location of a new private hospital within the grounds of University Hospital Galway have been scrapped by the Government in the wake of fears over the implications for parking in the area.
Health Minister, Mary Harney, told the Dáil that it was decided not to go ahead with the process even though expressions of interest had been received from private developers.
“As part of the competitive dialogue, the pre-qualified bidders decided, for commercial reasons, not to continue with the process,” she said.
While congestion and parking problems have not been listed as reasons for the change in policy, the Health Service Executive has confirmed that co-location is no longer on the agenda for the Galway facility.
