PorterShed's plans for the Connacht Tribune building on Market Street. The newspaper business will be relocating to Liosbán Business Park.

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Ambitious plans by the PorterShed technology hub will see the creation of office space for 350 people on Market Street in the city.

Galway City Innovation District Ltd, which operates PorterShed, has lodged planning applications for the redevelopment of the Connacht Tribune building to create space for 220 people.

The Connacht Tribune – which publishes the Galway City Tribune – will be relocating to new offices in Liosbán Business Park later this year.

Separately, PorterShed has sought permission for the redevelopment of a warehouse building adjacent to Market Street carpark, to create 130 co-working desk spaces to cater for its relocation from Ceannt Station.

The redevelopment of the Tribune building will involve adding a lightweight second floor over the existing building and a small extension to cater for a lift and stair core. There will be a roof garden/decked area overhead.

There will be a partial demolition of a two-storey element to the side and rear of the building, which will be replaced by a new enlarged projection over four floors.

The overhaul of the building will also include a new frontage onto Market Street.

“The development will result in the expansion of an important element of business/creative sector infrastructure to Galway City, and Market Street is ideally located for such a space being in close proximity to the city centre, public transport and cycling infrastructure.

“The existing premises is considered to be underutilised at present, with limited interaction with the street or the public. The development, including by virtue of the significant enhancement of the physical appearance of the premises, will revitalise and stimulate this part of the street,” the application reads.
