Galway Bay fm newsroom – The village of Kilrickle in Loughrea will not receive a water supply under Irish Water’s Capital Investment Plan for 2014 to 2016.
It was previously hoped that a 6.5 million euro allocation for Loughrea’s water supply under the plan would bring a water supply to approximately 140 homes in the village.
The village of Kilrickle has been without a water supply for over two decades, with around 400 residents relying on wells and rainwater tanks to meet their water requirements.
37 and a half million euro was allocated for water and wastewater systems in Galway under Irish Water’s Capital Investment Plan for 2014-2016.
It was hoped that the 6 and a half million euro announced for works in Loughrea would go towards bringing a water supply to Kilrickle.
In a statement issued to Galway Bay fm News, Irish Water states that the cost of undertaking the required works would be ‘significant’ and is not covered within the Capital Investment Plan.
The announcement follows recent meetings between Irish Water and Galway County Council over the proposed 5 thousand metre pipeline.
Irish Water says it’s currently examining funding options with the Department of the Environment and the Commission for Energy Regulation and will assess the viability of connecting un-serviced communities at a later date.
