Date Published: 10-Jan-2012

The roundabout at Galway Shopping Centre is to change into a signalised junction in the next few months.

The upgrade of the Bodkin roundabout was contentiously passed at a meeting of the City Council last night. [9/1]

Head of Galway Transportation Unit, Joe Tansey, gave a presentation to the Council about the plans for the roundabout at Galway Shopping Centre.

He said one aspect of the plan is to allow right turns out of Seán Mulvoy retail park, which is currently not allowed.

There will also be a right turn option exiting the Galway retail park at McDonalds.

The exit from Dunnes Stores on the Headford Road will form a signalised junction with the exit from Dún na Coiribe.

Controversy erupted when Councillor Catherine Connolly said she wanted some guarantees in relation to a separate roundabout towards Westside.

She said she would vote against the plans for the Bodkin roundabout if she didn’t get the answers she needed.

All hell broke loose when several Labour councillors said they wanted a decision on the Galway Shopping Centre roundabout deferred for a fortnight.

A motion to defer the decision was defeated.

Eventually the plans for the roundabout were passed by 7 votes to 5.
