PLANS to redevelop a number of protected buildings in the city’s ‘Latin Quarter’ into a new €10million bar, restaurant and upmarket hostel premises, have been lodged with Galway City Council.

Claire McDonagh has sought permission for the redevelopment of Restaurant Gemelles on Quay Street as well as four buildings on Quay Lane for a “vibrant, mixed-use scheme”.

The plan centres on No. 23 Quay Street (a protected structure), No. 25 Quay Street and numbers 2 to 5 Quay Lane (all protected), to provide a new bar and restaurant on the ground and first floors and hostel use on the second and third floors.

The works involve raising the existing walls at Quay Street and provide a new roof to accommodate the hostel, and there will also be an extension to the rear of the first floor.
