Plans for €1.4bn projects ready by year-end

PLANNINGapplications for two of Galway’s largest ever re-development projects, which will radically transform the city centre, will be lodged by the end of this year.

The €1 billion regeneration of Ceannt Station and the €300-€400 million redevelopment of Galway Harbour are in the final preparatory planning stages and will be lodged with planning authorities within months.

The new ruling majority of nine City Councillors on Galway City Council have pledge to prioritise the two developments which are seen as vital to the city’s continued success.

Cllr Mike Crowe, the Fianna Fáil leader in the pact involving FF, Fine Gael, and former PD Independent Cllrs, said the nine Cllrs would, where necessary, rezone land around the docks to facilitate the Harbour Boards plans and lobby Government for funding and support to make the redevelopment a reality.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for CIE said it is currently assessing tenders from developers for the Ceannt Station development which will be a public/private partnership.

The spokesperson said a developer will be chosen in the coming weeks and plans for the development will be submitted by the year’s end.
