Planning is key to transfer of farms
PLAN rather than postpone – that’s the advice from Galway IFA and Galway Macra to farmers in regards to succession issues that have to be faced up on all farms at some time.
With that in mind, Galway IFA and Macra have organised a seminar/public meeting in the Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry tonight (Thursday, November 1 at 8pm), dealing solely with succession issues.
The meeting will be addressed by Austin Finn, Land Mobility Service; Tom O’Farrell, Partner IFAC, Athenry; David Costello, Chairman of Galway Macra; and Anne Mitchell, Galway IFA Chairperson.
Roy O’Brien, Galway/Mayo IFA Regional Officer, told the Farming Tribune that the key aspect of farm succession was in the planning of such a move.
“Once farm families start to discuss this issue, it’s half the battle. There’s a lot of very good information out there and a lot of aspects to the process than can be tax advantageous so it’s good to talk about it.
“There is actually a fair cohort of young educated farmers who are willing to take on the challenge of running a farm and this can be done in a way that keeps both generations of the family looked after.
“But the one piece of advice I would give, is that it’s all about planning ahead, and all the better if all generations are in good health. Just put the process in train and start talking about it,” said Roy O’Brien.
