PLANNING APPEALS BOARD SANCTIONS SECONDARY SCHOOL IN KNOCKNACARRA
Date Published: 02-Oct-2008
The go ahead has been given for a new secondary school in Knocknacarra, despite opposition from local residents.
The school is to be the permanent building for Colaiste na Coiribe, which is currently housed in cramped conditions in a former primary school beside Bohermore roundabout
An Bord Pleanála has granted outline permission for the school on a greenfield site at Ballyburke, north of the Fána Burca estate.
Some of the Fána Burca residents had lodged an appeal stating that they believe their estate would be used as a drop off point for students.
They also expressed concerns about nuisance and anti-social behaviour due to the pedestrian entrance through the estate.
The appeals board has attached 17 conditions to the grant of permission, and these include that the school must not come into operation until a new link road has been built.
Also when full planning permission for the Knocknacarra school is being sought, a traffic control plan must be submitted to the City Council.
Local Cllr Donal Lyons is delighted this piece of vital infrastructure for Knocknacarra has got the go ahead
Cllr Lyons says the lobby must now begin to have the school included in the next round of buildings sanctioned by the Department of Education
