An open air market in the city centre could adversely impact on businesses in the area and hinder the expansion of the city.

City planners say these are among the reasons they are refusing permission for a 20 stall market at the Galway retail park on the Headford Road.

Bosco Joyce applied for permission for the market for a temporary five year period.

They state that the market would be visually obtrusive and would have traffic and waste management implications.

Planners said such a development could detract from existing business on the Headford road and is contrary to the city council development plan for the area.
