Plan to lure tourists in Galway ‘back the West’

Galway City Tribune – A plan to lure more tourists to quieter parts of the city, including Galway’s Westend, is being devised by City Hall.

The City Council has applied for funding of between €250,000 and €500,000 from Fáilte Ireland to improve the public realm at Raven Terrace, Dominick Street and Bridge Street.

If successful, the money – which will have to be matched with Council funding of 25% – will also be used to improve ‘wayfinding and interpretation’ along the River Corrib, canals and at Claddagh.

The idea is to entice tourists in busy parts of the city, such as Shop Street and Quay Street, to ‘cross the bridge’ to Galway’s West area.

“The improvements to the public realm will assist the area with its existing community, cultural and food events as well as improving the safety for visitors and locals in the area.

“The objective of the proposal is to direct visitors from the busy Quay Street and Shop Street area of the city and spread the benefits of tourism to more underutilised parts of the city with improved river, canal and Claddagh way walks,” said Brendan McGrath, Chief Executive of the City Council.
