Plain sailing for FG in Loughrea

BY the time the Volvo yachts had departed Galway Bay on Saturday evening, Fine Gael were also enjoying ‘plain sailing’ in the Loughrea electoral area.

For years, Fine Gael might have dreamed of taking four seats in Loughrea but the wind would very definitely have to be at their backs and at gale force strength too.

The word from the early boxes being opened was that Jimmy McClearn was polling well — five years ago he paid the price for being too unselfish for the party. This time he was back with a vengeance.

Peter Feeney, Mogie Maher and Bridie Willers were all hovering around the 1,700 mark according to the tallies — the four FG seats were on.

There were also a number of other sub-plots emerging. The colourful Ardrahan councilor, Michael Fahy — now in independent colours — topped the poll with a massive 2,247 first preferences, not enough to get him in until the third count, but enough to leave all other rivals trailing in his wake.

He used to be known as ‘The Stroke’ but through all his ups and downs he still has retained a loyal home support. They didn’t let their man down at the weekend.
