PJ Gallagher brings ‘Singlehood’ to the Comedy Carnival

Singlehood is Una McKevitt’s very funny piece of theatre about the joys of finding love starring PJ Gallagher and Eric Lalor at Galway Comedy Carnival.

While this is a play, it’s not really a play and although it’s called singlehood, it’s not always about being single. There’s music but it’s not a musical. Confused? Don’t be. All you need to know is that this is a searingly honest and incredibly funny piece of theatre about the joys of trying to find love. This smash hit by Una  McKevitt’s has sold out Vicar Street and the Olympia in Dublin and is finally on its way to Galway.

Starring two of Ireland’s favourite comedians, Eric Lalor and PJ Gallagher, this is an ensemble piece with eight characters spilling the beans on their most outrageous, toe curling romantic episodes.  The Irish Times described it as ‘like eavesdropping on a group of friends telling each other their most ridiculous, heart-breaking, hilarious and mundane stories about trying to find love.’ And that is it in a nutshell.

Una McKevitt in collaboration with writer David Coffey (Dan & Becs, Fade St) interviewed over 50 singletons to bring their raw and revealing stories to the stage to hilarious and devastating effect.

‘In conceiving Singlehood I considered what it means to be single in a society where romantic relationships have such high status and defined rituals. Are single people just waiting for love to find them or does being single offer its own, possibly richer, rewards?’

All single life is represented on stage with performers dropping in and out of various characters that are by turn – straight, gay, married, single, young and old. All romantic life is here and while the material can be revealing nothing is too crude or explicit. It’s entertaining, it’s thought-provoking and it’s a brilliant night out.

“Honest, funny and at times a little sad, Singlehood will be enjoyed by singletons and smug marrieds alike.” MetroHerald – ****
