The CEO and founder of Pieta House says its ‘fantastic news’ that planning permission has been granted to open a centre in Tuam.

County planners have approved the organisations planning application to change a house on Demesne, Sun street into a facility for its services.

It will be the first suicide and self harm crisis centre in the west of the country, and follows two years of campaigning and a major fundraising drive by people in counties such as Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

The Tuam facility will serve as a centre of excellence for the West and will employ up to 20 therapists who will run a 5 day service from 8am to 8pm.

It will cost an estimated 250 thousand euro a year to run with the support of a number of local fundraising events throughout the west.

CEO of Pieta House Joan Freeman says she is hopeful work to transform the house will begin in January
