Photographs and Faeries, an exhibition by local artist Regina O’Dea is in its final days at Courthouse in Kinvara – it runs until this Sunday, October 28.

Regina has trained in crafts and interior design and has experience in areas from model-making to community arts.

For this exhibition she produced a set of cyanotype prints that offer a record of personal memories. She is interested in photographing old and decaying buildings, and recording a type of built environment that is fast disappearing. The many layers of paint, peeling wallpaper, rusted bed-irons and abandoned household items that she has captured in her work, contain wonderful colours and textures. The images of details such as súgán chairs and Sacred Heart pictures provide a snapshot of a past Ireland.  The exhibition includes a group of fairy figures, whimsical ‘beings’, that Regina has fashioned from wire, clay, paint, fabric and found objects, each with its own particular qualities.

The cyanotype prints she has created are printed from digital negatives of photographs taken by Regina over several years. The technique she uses gives the prints their distinctive cyan blue colour.  Regina’s work stems from a desire to celebrate the natural world, connecting with and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.

“We need to remind ourselves that we are part of this creation rather than having dominion over it,” she says.

The exhibition runs daily from 11am-5pm until this Sunday, October 28.
