Penguin ‘hang out’ plan for Atlantaquaria

Plans for a ‘penguinarium’ in Salthill are advancing. The owners of Galway Atlantaquaria are planning an extension to its existing aquarium along the Promenade.

As well as an aquarium for penguins, the new extension to the aquarium will include an “exotic animals’ enclosure” as well as enhancement of the existing main entrance and lobby of the visitor attraction.

Galway Atlantaquaria Ltd has invited tenders for contractors to carry out the work.

The existing facility is Ireland’s largest native aquarium, and has 60 exhibits featuring 170 species, including the ‘largest white skate’ and tiny baby starfish. It offers opportunities to hold or touch starfish, Irish sharks and spider crab.

Galway City Councillor Donal Lyons (Ind) has said that a facility “where penguins could hang out” would be compatible with the area’s recreational and amenity zoning.

“Tourism is very important to the business community in Salthill and this initiative is an excellent opportunity to complement the existing tourist related activities in the area,” he said.
