Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway city and county councillors are set to lose out on expense payments of up to 20 thousand euro during their term in office.
According to today’s Irish Independent, the salaries of mayors across the country could also face a 60 percent cut and strict caps are to be introduced.
The cuts are to be introduced by Environment Minister Phil Hogan in a bid to reduce the amounts paid to our local politicians.
Councils in Galway will have the mayor’s pay capped at 20 thousand euro while in Cork the payment to the Mayor could be more than halved from 79 thousand euro to a maximum of 39 thousand.
Minister Hogan is also cutting the budget available to attend conferences.
Previously councillors could claim up to 4 thousand 700 euro to attend conferences or training courses, but this will now be capped at 700 euro per year.
