Past and present come alive at Áras Eanna

Two exhibitions with strong connections to the Aran Islands are currently running at Inis Oírr’s arts centre, Áras Éanna.

One is a retrospective show from one of Ireland’s leading expressionist artist, Mick Mulcahy, alongside new paintings from his recent residency on Inis Oírr. Entitled Nowhere to Hide at Sea, that’s in the Áras Éanna art gallery.

In the courtyard outside, there’s a chance to go back in time with Old Aran in Colour, a show based on the books Old Ireland in Colour by NUI Galway academics John Breslin and Sarah-Anne Buckley. Consisting of 20 colourised old photos from the Aran Islands, that exhibition runs at this outdoor setting until the end of September.

Mick Mulcahy, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year, was the first artist ever to hold an exhibition in the building that now houses Áras Éanna, explains the Centre’s Artistic Director, Dara McGee.

The Waterford-born painter spent a winter on Inis Oírr in the late 1980s, when he showed his work in what was a former weaving factory.
