The Christmas park and ride initiative, which is due to come into effect from Monday, is now likely to have an added dimension.

Apart from cars being accommodated at Galway Racecourse, parking facilities are also set to be provided in Renmore for the next three weeks.

It is the aim of Galway City Council to remove 1,000 cars from the city over the festive season.

Agreement has already been reached that workers and shoppers can park at Ballybrit had avail of a bus service to and from the city every 15 minutes.

The service will operate from 7.30am to 9.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 7pm on Sundays.

But in a new development, it is now likely that a park and ride facility will operate from the former Corrib Great Southern Hotel on the Dublin Road.
