Issues in relation to the Park and Ride Service that ran during last week’s Volvo Ocean Race festival were raised at last night’s city council meeting.

In reference to ticket price and operational costs Councillor Ollie Crowe said there was no value for money provided for the park and ride service this year.

Councillor Crowe said that the service, which ran every 5 minutes from Galway Racecourse at Ballybrit was excessive in cost for the council and users and instead, the service should run from four different locations across the city at 15 minute intervals.

Director of Services Ciaran Hayes said that following the success of the park and ride service for the festival in 2009, it was necessary to bring in additional buses.

He pointed out they accommodated 4943 people on Saturday which accounted for nearly 10,000 journeys filling 200 buses.
